about

Anyone that's been following me since E.G.O. or that has even remotely paid attention to my beat choices, knows that I choose to write to a lot of Yppah's music. His tunes are just big and layered and so much more than the average instrumental most rappers seem to choose. His albums have concepts and themes and I hope one day he scores entire movies. I urge you to check him out. It'll make you yppaH...? ;) (tuuuuurrrrn it around ... yeah, you did it!)

I've always been drawn to the complexity of Yppah's music and challenged myself to write to his music as it stands. Again, they aren't beats made for rappers, fuck, he might even hate rap (haha), but because they're always such beautiful pieces, I pride myself on writing longer verses, bridges, and just shutting up and letting the music play when it should.

"81" is actually a song of Yppah's called "D. Song" off of his album "Eighty One." I was immediately drawn to this track and had the BRILLIANT(ha!) idea of writing a song in and around growing old (eh, 81, see what i did there?) and still trying to do this rap thing. The first verse is definitely where I was when I started making music, the middle is I guess how I feel currently toward making music, and the last verse is where I hope to be mentally and emotionally with music when I grow "too old to do it."

I'm in a different place these days. I'm happy, so I'm told. These songs that I intend to inspire with still seem rather somber to me. It's weird. I hope the little bit of sunshine I managed to grab and sing about finds a way to get you through your day, and after you can come over and we'll do something stupid like edward-40-hands on a Tuesday.

---- LYRICS ----

If I knew where this came from I'd give it a name/
Dress it up and protect it from the fray and cliche/
Teach it to speak in colorless shades of sea gray/
Until then please leave me with these nothings I've made/
I'll be the only atheist asking god for rain/
When the password to my note cloud escapes my brain/
Introduce me to a man that rules his day unafraid/
So I can ask if he's allergic to grapes, women, and shade/
Quick to tell a stranger my deepest secrets not cause I'm brave/
Those who love you tend to judge you and the success that you crave/
Not standing behind me is as just as bad as standing in the way/
But no sir, I will not cave/
This is my livelihood I've provided for display/
This is my lonely adventure down a path unpaved/
This is my creative mediocrity that you will make a mockery of/
But save your sorry's for my grave/

One day, one day/ I'm gonna have it all somehow, some way, some way/
It can take a lifetime to be an overnight success they say/
Fuck it, I'll still be dope when I'm 81/
One day, one day/ I'm gonna have it all somehow, some way, some way
It can take a lifetime to be an overnight success they say/
Fuck it, I'll still be dope when I'm 81/

You ever felt like you were chasing your dream away/
40 oz. to freedom I'll be okay/
You ever felt like you were chasing your dream away/
40 oz. to freedom/ if you don't sleep who needs one/
x2

If there's no future in it, at least it's a present worth remembering/
You'll never hear that Kap wound up surrendering/
I'm in for the injuries/ Let downs, and fallouts, photo ops, handshakes, and hugs that mean everything/
Reppin my silver fro and shoes with the velcro/
Slacks, dinner jacket with the patches on the elbow/
Singing all my old shit, dancing like an asshole, speaking my mind cause that's always come natural/
Finally a VIP, handicapped parking spot/
Don't need no groupies just the wife and the Icy Hot/
Pouring out some liquor for the million dollar deal I never got/
But bitter I am not, a quitter I am not/
Still chasing my dreams wit a bad memory and worse knees for the eldest earthlings/
Chillin in a cipher every Sunday wit my grandkids, showing em what freestyle really means/
